Lewis Shell, U.S. Army

I joined the Texas Army National Guard in January 1963. Basic training was at Fort Polk, (Leesville) La.,
advanced training for the artillery was at Fort Sill, (Lawton) Ok., and then on to Fort Bliss (El Paso), Tx., for radar training at a Nike Hercules missile base. Denton, Tx., was the location of the base to which I was assigned as a target tracking radar operator.

Denton was one of the four locations assigned to protect the DFW area during the cold war. The protection was due mainly because of the operations at Carswell AFB. I attended the NCO academy in Fort Hood, Tx in 1965, and, left the military unceremoniously in 1969.

We did track some Russian spy planes flying over the U.S. from time to time.
