Classmate Janet (Middleton) Swanson and her sister Marsha (Middleton) Murray hosted food and fellowship at their Caddo Peak Ranch for visiting literature scholars during the 25th annual Robert E. Howard Days conference at Cross Plains in mid-June 2011. Guests included Howard enthusiasts from France, Russia, Scotland, 18 states and 50 Texas cities as well as a few of Janet's '59 AHS Eagle classmates who crashed the event. Robert E. Howard (1906-1936) was a famous writer and poet from Cross Plains who often hiked to Caddo Peak for inspiration.

Eagles are, left to right, John Compere, Fred and Linda Chapel, Lorna (Tucker) Harrison, Dolores Compere, Janet, Marsha and Chuck Harrison.

Sosebee Bluff

On the way home from ETHA meeting in Waco we went by Lake Whitney. For More than 30 years our family had been having an on-going battle over the name change for the park at the end of the Whitney dam. My great- uncle, George W. Sosebee and his family donated the land and money to build this park. This was probably in the late 1890 period since he died in1897. For many years the park had a sign proclaiming it Sosebee Bluff Park. In about 1980 the U.S. corps of engineers did some work on the park and the new sign stated that it was Soldiers Bluff Park. I am happy to report that they have now erected a large historical marker type sign stating that this area is once again Sosebee Bluff and giving details of the familys donations and role in building this park for the Lake Whitney area.

Life is Good!

The Great Labor Day Kayak Caper

For Labor Day 2010, Stephanie and Art Crothers were going to Crystal Beach on the Gulf
for their son's wedding. They were transporting a kayak on top of their Tahoe, presumably not part of
the ceremony. Donie Balusek and Barbara Cowen wanted to go to the beach and asked the Crothers
to pick them up on the highway between Dallas and Houston. Despite being warned, Barbara was wearing
an outfit typically seen around Huntsville, and Donie said she would celebrate with her flamingo hat.
(Donie's daughter's Allstate Insurance business in Pasadena had recently almost been hit by a runaway vehicle,
so Donie needed a break.)

As it turned out, for some unexplained reason the Crothers detoured through deep east Texas,
completely missing the two classmates. Nevertheless the wedding went swimmingly,
and a good time was had by all. Barbara changed from her prison garb to a more appealing
Vanna White original, and Donie's hat kept jealous pelicans at bay, to borrow a phrase.

Freddie-Forrest

Forrest says: Coming back from my Dad's this week I stopped by to see Freddie
Martinez. Had not seen him in 50 years. Enclosed is a picture of the two
of us after breakfast at the Cracker Barrel in Fayetville, NC along I-95.
It was great to see him again after all these years. Still the laid back,
soft spoken fellow I remember.
